VIDEOART: MATEUSZ PECYNA
WHAT’S THE POINT?
OPENING: 29. 7. 2025 AT 7PM
EXHIBITION: 30. 7. – 13. 9. 2025
Basquiat, Warhol, and Duchamp take to the pitch. Tracey Emin warms up, a headless Banksy greets the fans, and Marina Abramović takes her place in goal. The match can begin!
In his witty work Artists’ Match, Mateusz Pecyna transforms the football field into a metaphor for the competitive nature of the art world, skillfully modifying the FIFA game to serve his vision. In an exhibition further enriched by additional installations, Pecyna turns the gallery into a complex, immersive environment. Drawing on his personal experience in both football and visual art, he offers reflections on the current state of modern culture: „The process of fetishizing records, statistics, and rankings, alongside the constant pursuit of transgression across all fields, has become a key driver of our ever-accelerating progress. Strong gender stereotypes, relentless competition, and the cult of the individual are not realities limited to the football pitch.“ explains Pecyna.
The strategy proposed by the exhibition to counter these phenomena is humor. While humor may not solve the world’s problems, it enables us, at least for a moment, to gain distance from an overwhelming reality. Sometimes, the best we can do is to laugh – not as an escape, but as a way to confront the world more clearly.
Mateusz Pecyna (b. 1999) is a recent graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, Poland. He has held solo exhibitions in Łódź and participated in numerous group shows at venues such as the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw (Poland) and Kunsthalle Bratislava (Slovakia).
